The two comings of Christ

We preach not only one coming of Christ, but also a much more glorious second coming. His first coming gave an example of patient endurance; his second will bring the crown of the divine kingdom.

Almost everything relating to our Lord Jesus Christ has two aspects. His birth is one example, for he was begotten by God before all ages and was also born of the Virgin at the end of the ages. His coming down from heaven is another: when he came first it was in obscurity, like dew on a fleece; but he is to come again and that coming will be in full view of everyone. The first time he came he was wrapped in swaddling clothes in a manger; when he comes the second time he will be clothed in light as in a garment. In his first coming he endured the cross, thinking nothing of the shame. His second coming will be in glory, with hosts of angels in attendance.

Our hearts must not rest in Christ' first appearance among us, but must also long for him to come again. Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord was our cry when he first came. When we meet our Lord with angels at his second coming we shall again cry out in adoration: Blessed is he who comes in the name of the Lord.
